Enroll Now Aerial Momentum Workshop Series with Sommer Panage

Aerialist Sommer Panage

March 22 – 24, 2024

In this three part series, we examine the fundamentals of finding and using momentum in the air as we move on the ropes and silks. Knowing where and how to use momentum in skills like beats and swivels is a fantastic way to add a dynamic quality to our movement. It opens up new modes of expression and even new “tricks.” However, momentum can also feel difficult at times, as it challenges our grip, body awareness and control.

In this series, we will explore momentum methodically. We’ll examine both the theory, i.e. how to think about momentum and the the practice. We’ll cover body and shoulder position and pathways. We’ll play with entering and exiting momentum based movement as well as how momentum can transition us into and out of static work.

Students are invited to pick one workshop or take any mix. Each class gradually increases in its demand on the body, so students with some momentum experience may prefer 102 and 103, while students with little to no momentum experience will want to begin with 101. That said, all of these classes are designed with momentum novices in mind.

Prerequisites:

  • Hip key off the ground, both sides
  • 3 straddle ups, off the ground, both sides
  • Able to complete with no guidance at least 1 drop
  • 30 second dead hang (hands only on silk/rope
  • For 102 and 103 familiarity with meat hooks is a plus.

Momentum 101 focuses on the core basics. This is the class for anyone who has never done a beat, hated the few beats they tried, or just generally doesn’t feel comfortable with momentum yet. We cover all the basic beats such as bell, scissor, pike, and straddle. We’ll cover different variations on each, how to train them on your own, and common form and position cues. We’ll also begin to answer the age old question of: “ok beats are cool but when do I use them?!”

Momentum 102 picks up from the basics and makes our beats bigger and more powerful! We look at “pulling” at the top of our beats, generating flat beats, “kicking” in our beats, hip hop beats and beats that twist and turn. We’ll also look at swivels and flares! With those tools, we’ll then look a 1-2 small sequence that use some of these movements and talk more about how to bring momentum into our choreography.

Momentum 103 focuses more on the questions of “using” our momentum. We’ll look at climbs that use momentum, hand-slides, crucifix beats, and tuck-throughs. After that we’ll get a little creative and look at some games and tools that can help us make our own sequences using momentum!
